Media Release For Immediate Release – November 12, 2007 Green Check Program for Consumers Recognizes Environmental Efforts Making A Difference Environmentally (MADE) A new, recognizable symbol will help consumers select products and services based on the environmental efforts by companies. The Green Check Recognition Program is now being implemented as another way of substantiating consumer choices and the environmental “due diligence” of the business sector. “Check for Green Check, it is a way for the consumer to feel better and confident about the products and services we choose on a daily basis,” said Bill Steer of the Canadian Ecology Centre, the national, non-profit, developer of the program. “All of us, including companies, are Making A Difference Environmentally. We are embracing and developing changes that lessen our consumptive behaviour. As consumers we need to recognize these efforts by saluting those businesses that are initiating change.” He said it is the “Canadian way of incrementally, making positive changes,” and “developing our roles as stewards of the environment.” He said the education program is similar to the Health Check symbol on foodstuffs. The Green Check symbol is based on the MADE principle of Making A Difference Environmentally and will become visible on products and services. He said the process for evaluation is based on current guidelines or standards or “from processes and plans” submitted by the company. The profile of recognition and supportive documentation can be found on the www.canadianecology.ca website. The program was launched, the day after Remembrance Day. “Many people have fought and contributed during a number of conflicts and we remember” said Mr. Steer. “Many companies and organizations are identifying the need to Make A Difference Environmentally, and we should recognize these efforts to make for a better environment, something we can all relate to.” -30- For more information, contact Bill Steer, bill@canadianecology.ca or 1-705-744-1715,ext. 570 or 1-888-747-7577.
